People gather at the end of the famous Manhattan Beach pier in California to watch the giant glassy waves. The sun breaks through the afternoon mist silhouetting the familiar red roof of the old "Round House Cafe".

Please, take a second and tell us your thoughts on this painting.

What others have said about Calm After The Storm:

Dear Steve, To say that your paintings are awesome would be an under statement, they are much more than that. What I liked especially is the use of tones in colour that may not be visible to an eye. For example the shadows or the reflections are in vivid colours, which in reality may not be seen. This treatment gives your paintings the much needed relief from the mundane. I have begun to paint in water colours recently and finding my way to do it better, then best. Your paintings serve me as exemplary to learn, to absorb, to improve. I have saved the link to your gallery in my toolbar, so I can savour the beauty your paintings at will. Truly, chandra

I can hear it and I can feel the spray.

I can hear it and I can feel the spray.

1961 i grew up here, on this pier spent long hours learning to fish bouncing bonito and barries with a cane rod and Penn 500 life made sense here, then my first kiss, by the bait shed and here, there was no war

This is truly lovely. I grew up in Manhattan Beach & still have such fond memories of the pier and the beach. You capture my memories with this magnificent piece. Thanks so much.

I liked the waves and the mist. I feel you really captured it well. As a novice with painting with watercolors I can appreciate the realism the picture portrays.

the mood, atmosphere, colour and vibrancy is quite superb

Lived on the Strand in MB during the 70's and looked at the pier daily. I was fortunate enough to know many of the wonderful artists in the South Bay during that time...It was a great time to live there...Steve, you "nailed it!"

I grew up on Manhattan, and graduated from Micohi in '61. My mother grew up in the house I grew up in, and she graduated from Redondo High in '32. The image of the M.B. pier captures very well the feeling of a pier on a blustery day. Of course, the image is one that the artist copied from a photograph. It is too, too, realistic, having an enormous amount of precisely correctly proportioned detail and color, and therefore loses some of the sponenaity that would derive from a watercolor painted without reference to a photo. Admittedly, producing a painting like this "on the spot" would be very difficult (I have painted watercolors on the strand, and the wind tends to dry out the paper pretty quickly.) I would urge the artist to try to produce on-the-spot paintings occasionally. Of course, there will be many failures done outside; but the artist can continue to do in-the-studio paintings to bring in income, while honing outside skills. Discriminating watercolor lovers will quickly recognize an on-the-spot watercolor, and if executed well, will be willing to pay dearly for it. Good luck to the artist in his future endeavors.

This painting grabbed me the moment I saw it; I could feel the temperature of the day and the mist rising from the water, I could hear the sound of the ocean as the waves hit the shore. This is one of those paintings you could walk into...simply beautiful.

cool and good site keept it

I love this painting. I grew up in Manhattan Beach and this is the view from our house on the Strand. I treasure every appearance of the everchanging ocean, even the slate gray waves. For the record, however, the waves rarely - and only during major storms - break at the end of the pier. We used to watch, hoping, usually in vain, for the white foam of the crashing waves to come up to the concrete.

This is too cruel to make me choose between the house on Catalina, Foster's, 22nd.St. and all the others of Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan. I grew up in Redondo, attended both RUHS and MiCoHi so they all brought back memories of summer days on the sand and a time we thought would never end! I have also been to a lot of the places you paint in Florida. Destin, Mobile, Panama City and Gulf Shores are great beach places but none can compare with the South Bay. Loved your site and I'll pass it on to others who will love it too...Pat

Having grown up just down from Manhattan Beach, I just love all your paintings of Southern California! But this one is especially...."special." The one thing I miss about not living near the ocean is the smell of the salt air first thing in the morning. This certainly is a reminder!!

My husband and I spent many cool evenings and nights in Manhattan Beach, so we have MANY fond memories of this beautiful place. I'm a born and raised native L.A. girl and we just moved to Colorado Springs and bought our first home. We are looking for a beautiful painting of Manhattan Beach to display in our living room and your Calm After The Storm so far is a strong contender!

Hello. I'm a highschool boy who going to be a great(!) designer or painter in South Korea. :) I have seen your painting a few months. Everytime I see your painting, it makes me happy. I have wondered how you make great mood. hmm..I have so many words to write. but.. I'm poor in English. I can't know whether my words is correct or not..:0 Anyway Thank your for sharing it. ( sorry for poor english :D )

WOW!! I'm THERE!! Your work is so great I have a hard time picking a favorite. Paint ON!!

WOW!! I'm THERE!!

I like the colors, the mist, the general mood of the painting. Very well done! The detail in the forground is a nice reward for really looking at the painting!

I am recently attending a college Watercolor class and was to admire famous watercolorists work. Well this was defenitly an inspiration for me and my other works for the class thank you

This painting is full of life and is breath taking. The use of colors is perfect and makes the painting so real.

My father, Ronald Miles, is also a watercolor artist. In viewing other works of watercolor, I can say that this particular piece is a gem! I love the many different subtle colors depicted in the waves. And the clouds! My father also has a knack for painting clouds! Sherri Owen at sherrio@mindspring.com

Beautiful....

You can see the action in the waves.

After viewing most of your paintings, I kept coming back to this wonderful piece of art. They're all very good, and it was really hard to pick a favorite. Keep up the great work! :)

I feel that I can almost hear and smell the salt water!

I love the use of color and the pier. It is just a wonderful watercolor and to me very relaxing. I only been painting for a couple of years and appreciate the fact that you paint what you feel not what you see. Thanks

The scene is so realistic, I can "hear" the sound of the surf and feel the mist on my face. Nice work and very worthy of the magnificent website you have created. M. McCrea from Maine (for some reason I am unable to access the name and email box; quite probably it is my set up as I am having browser probl

steve i spent many years at the beach in avalon n.j. and have done many paintings of the area. mostly pastels but some oils and w/c. you have a great talent i enjoyed your work very much.

It looks exactly like the pier...I live in the area, but it also depicts the mood. You can tell is cold and the sun is starting to peek through the clouds. Just beautiful

Now I live in Pittsburgh, PA, but for many years I was a SCUBA instructor in Orange County, CA. I recall many winter days sitting on the beach looking at a scene just like the one you captured here and marvelling at the many moods of the ocean. Your beautiful painting provides the visual image, my memory fills in the sound.

You have captured the pushing and pulling "feeling" of the water so well that one can almost hear the roaring surf. I imagine this is a very rare and exceptional effect for a painting. Well done!

There were several paintings I really liked. This was the last one I looked at twice. I like the way you captured the movement of the water. You have a talent to treasure, you should consider it a gift from God and give Him the praise. Thank you for sharing it.

Steve, I really like the atmosphere Calm After the Storm sets. I love cool, wet and gray paintings like this one. I'm 15 and have been painting with watercolor for about a year but have definatly not become as good as you. How long did it take to get to the ability you have now?

I like how it feels. We all have "storms" in our life but when it's ready and supposed to calm down it will. I like how the light is conveyed—it's soft, and settling. It's a nice piece.

This picture is beautifully done..very realistic! Also, I love ocean pictures.

nice effect of the oceans' mist directly under the wooden structure.

me parece fantástica la sensación de niebla en el ambiente

I am from the Maine coast, now transplanted in Houston, Texas. This painting reminded me of home

steve.....i am a sculptor and i was talking with your brother. john told me a bit about you and your work. you are really good. how you do what you do with watercolor astounds me. primarily, your ability with light. you create an entire mood..one can hear, smell, feel wind and sun..even taste it. this is especially true of 'calm after the storm'.

I love your Manhattan Beach pier, both for nostalgia and its' Dynamics. You can feel the excitement of the ocean...

This painting delivers the movement of the sea...when I returned from Hawaii after spending 2 weeks in the surf I made this my background on my computer an "felt" like I was still in the surf!
