I was introduced to Steve’s paintings when I worked at Eglin AFB and was asked to find gifts for guest speakers at a conference. I wanted to get something “local” and found his paintings at a gallery in Destin. I bought several, had them framed, and the recipients loved them. Subsequently, I was gifted a couple of larger prints; Flipper and Misty Pass. They hang in my bedroom and make me smile every day. I so was so sorry to hear about Steve’s passing. My heartfelt sympathy goes to Ms. Craine and his entire family

hello steve, how long on average does it take you to complete a painting? Are you still painting new work? Do you work from photographs or memory? And finally when you leave highlights, like on small hand rails on piers or small fiqures or the like: do you mask out or just leave unpainted in the process of painting?

Thank you for your beautiful watercolors.

Mr. Hills, My name is Tanya and I work for the Bakersfield Police Department in Bakersfield, Ca. We have a facility here in Bakersfield for children who have been taken into custody because their parents have been booked into jail. A citizen in town has donated some of your watercolor painting which have been identified as "Fantasy Fish". It is not a part of job I enjoy. All children Love fish and I am able to talk to them about the paintings and the fish tank which is in the intake area. This has seemed to make the short term transition a little less stressful for the children. Well sorry for the long story but this brings me to mine. I have a special needs son, Morgan, who Loves Fish! I have exhausted all of my ideas on where to find this type of your artwork. I was wanting to know where I could find your watercolor paintings "Fantasy Fish"? The watercolor paintings are on what I believe are canvas and has no frame, which I love. If you could give me any help on where to find your paintings or if there are any to be found. Thank You, Tanya Nousch

  • Anita H, on October 22nd, 2008 commented about the painting Foster Freeze :

I am the one who hauled the "Cones" sign to my sister in Seattle. I also went to South School and am old enough to reember when the building was built as well as when it was torn down and have many memories of Fosters and the softies they served. When I was in high school my best friend and I used to sit on the curb in front of Fosters eating our cones and watching the cars go by.

  • An anonymous visitor on October 20th, 2008 commented about the painting Foster Freeze :

What a time capsule! I must have had hundreds of their 5 cent cones. I went to South School right across the street and saw this view everyday. I have moved to Seattle, but my sister was there when they tore it down. She was quite upset and I told her to go get a piece of it. She brought it to me the next time she flew up here. The word "Cones" as seen on the blue trim around the roof and at the left center of this painting now proudly hangs in my kitchen! It is made of wood and cut out with a jig saw and has many layers of white paint.

Also, do you show at a particular gallery or have a studio where visitors are welcome? Warmest regards, Ruth

This is my favorite of the paintings listed on pages 1 - 9. I like the realism and rustic aura it gives off. I like the varied techniques used to apply the watercolor. I believe the painting is well rounded and detailed just enough to not be overbearing. If I were not an artist myself I would probably buy a copy, but times are rough after Katrina. For the record, I studied art at the John McCrady Art School from 1972 - 1974, an experience I am sure you treasure as much as I do. Dan Marcus.

Seeing this lovely painting brought back so many happy memories. In the 1970s I went to elementary school at Patterson School(formerly South School) right across the street. Usually I brought a lunch to school, but every once in a while, my grandmother would meet me at the edge of the schoolyard at lunchtime and we would walk across the street to get a burger and french fries. The burgers had a wonderful 1000-island style sauce---to this day, my aunt and I still talk about that unique sauce!! Those sweet memories of my grandmother taking me for a simple but much treasured treat are very vivid even 20 years later. She passed away many years ago, but I always think of her whenever I pass that corner of PCH and Knob Hill. Thanks for your lovely painting.

I was raised in Manhattan Beach and graduated from Mira Costa (Class of '63). The picture of the Palms is nice and depicts a nice portion of the Beach. HOWEVER, to me Manhattan Beach is best depicted by its landmark pier. My father, Joseph Abowitt, worked for many many years for the MB - he had a lot to do with the liveability of this City. I have seen MB go through many changes and although it seems nice now - I believe the close unity of the city has changed. I imagine people who live in MB now love it as I loved it between 1945 - 1963. All this aside Mr. Hills, you are a wonderful artist. If it still exists, another wonderful landmark is Live Oaks Park. It has been three years since I've seen Manhattan Beach.

I have been involved in the visual arts at my local high school including murals and other projects. I just got started working with oil paints and try to find inspiration from other artists, while all my artwork is a one of a kind original. I try to reflect certain styles of artists including similar perspectives and subject material. I say "if you want to be a master artist, learn from one" and I was amazed, as well as inspired by this wonderful artist who created this water scene. I am from Florida, so this painting seems familiar to some areas I've observed. Great job, wonderful artist! Dave

The colors are great and the detail is impressive, the time spent on sketching and getting ready to begin the picture and even all the stages one must go through to wet and dry makes me exhausted thinking about it. YOu need plenty of time to be this good. The painting makes me wonder how you keep things so crisp and clear. I do watercolor and hope to accomplish something of the same quality. Thanks for the great example.

  • Steve Paliwoda, e-mail address on April 22nd, 2004 commented about the painting Calm After The Storm :

I grew up on Manhattan, and graduated from Micohi in '61. My mother grew up in the house I grew up in, and she graduated from Redondo High in '32. The image of the M.B. pier captures very well the feeling of a pier on a blustery day. Of course, the image is one that the artist copied from a photograph. It is too, too, realistic, having an enormous amount of precisely correctly proportioned detail and color, and therefore loses some of the sponenaity that would derive from a watercolor painted without reference to a photo. Admittedly, producing a painting like this "on the spot" would be very difficult (I have painted watercolors on the strand, and the wind tends to dry out the paper pretty quickly.) I would urge the artist to try to produce on-the-spot paintings occasionally. Of course, there will be many failures done outside; but the artist can continue to do in-the-studio paintings to bring in income, while honing outside skills. Discriminating watercolor lovers will quickly recognize an on-the-spot watercolor, and if executed well, will be willing to pay dearly for it. Good luck to the artist in his future endeavors.

Dear Steve, have been water coloring for about a year and would be interested if you could e-mail me the list of water color paints you use. I find it hard to obtain the various value of hues you obtain to creat depth and such great contrast. If you are teaching, I assume you may have made some video teaching aides. If so, send me info. In the meantime I have been painting some of your webb pictures and have been trying to improve and the colors just pop out.It seems to me that picking the right complementary colors and getting there values right would achieve the esthetic effects that your paintings so well depict. I have always wanted to obtain realistic water reflections, so hope to hear from you. Scot

This is a great painting, and it's fascinating to read what you folks think about it and about Foster's Freeze. I volunteer with the Los Angeles Conservancy Modern Commitee (www.modcom.org) and we have been working hard for 20 years saving places like this. The 1953 McDonald's at Lakewood and Florence in Downey was a great victory. This particular stand may be gone, but it's funny that the general idea is that the entire 'lifestyle' is gone. It may be 2004, but you could still have 'one more rootbeer freeze' by going to an identical 1950's Foster's in Torrance, or in Hawthorne. You can get a .59 cent burger under actual golden arches in Downey, bowl a game at Java Lanes in Long Beach... or you can have a night out at the Vineland Drive-In theatre in the City of Industry. I have a feeling I'm much younger than some of the folks reading here, but the things you loved 40 or 50 years ago are often times alive and well just a few miles away and I encourage you to go out and support them. Check out our site and maybe you will want to support the work of the Conservancy as well. We have a big 20th anniversary driving tour coming up in September, 2004. Thank you.

My grandfather, John Poe, owned and operated this Foster's Freeze from the mid 50s until he passed away in August 1962. His sister and her husband, Marie and Laz Paul, then bought it and continued to operate it until sometime in the 70s. During the late 50s and early 60s, I can remember spending many summer vacations with them and got to help out at the store sweeping around the store and picking up trash and stacking stuff up in the back storeroom. My pay was a frosty cone or a slush or whatever I wanted for every two hours I worked there. I can vividly remember all the high school and college kids hanging there every Friday and Saturday night. Back in the late 40s, my grandpa, my dad and his brother made all the mix for all the Foster Freeze stores in Southern California. When they were bought out in the early 50s they were given several of the Foster Freeze stores in exchange. They were located in Santa Monica, Venice, Redondo Beach and Arcadia.

My dad died 15 years ago this fall and the steering wheel from the "Rose" hangs in my home. Thanks for the memories.

I love this painting. I grew up in Manhattan Beach and this is the view from our house on the Strand. I treasure every appearance of the everchanging ocean, even the slate gray waves. For the record, however, the waves rarely - and only during major storms - break at the end of the pier. We used to watch, hoping, usually in vain, for the white foam of the crashing waves to come up to the concrete.

I grew up in Redondo, attended both RUHS and MiCoHi so they all brought back memories of summer days on the sand and a time we thought would never end! I have also been to a lot of the places you paint in Florida. Destin, Mobile, Panama City and Gulf Shores are great beach places but none can compare with the South Bay. Loved your site and I'll pass it on to others who will love it too...Pat

I use to go jogging at exactly a beach and I have such great memories of this time and you captured it wonderfully. All your pieces capture the Florida light as well as the Calif. light exceptionally well. Your work with boats is exceptional as well.

It is a very nice portrait She sits in a wicker like chair with a blue bonnet and blue dress looking straight at you...She also has , it looks like a pencil or crochet knitting in lap.       Hi, I very much like your work. It was either "Calm after the storm" or this one as my favorite. I am a 'very' new beginer with watercolors so forgive me for not knowing the proper terms for discription. I only know what appeals to me, I found these pictures brought me directly to where they are. I love the detail, I do not know what type of watercolor tenique you are using here but it is something I would like to try. Do you Teach? Have videos available? I would be very interested. thanks, molly

  • Sue Aldrich~Wood, e-mail address on April 26th, 2002 commented about the painting Foster Freeze :

Foster Freeze was an icon to many generations of Redondo Beach & Redondo Union High School students. I can still see the old foster freeze, meeting my frends there so many times throughout the years. What a shame it could not be restored but instead like all of the great old places in Redondo <like The Fox Redondo, should have absolutely been restored>, it too was torn down all in the name of "modernizing" Redondo Beach. It would be so wonderful if those in charge had left some of these great places so that our kids and the generations to come could have seen what Redondo Beach really was.

What a wonderful memory this picture brings to me. As a young girl I would walk home past this house from the Seaside Lagoon. To me this house represents the old Redondo Beach that I loved, before all the condos were built. What an incredible painting, it is like I am standing across the street on Catalina Avenue looking at this house like I did so many times before.

I grew up on Knob Hill, too, and my parents used to send all 7 of us kids down to Foster Freeze on summer nights. We'd trail home, licking ice cream cones and carrying Jamocha shakes for mom and dad. My sister also worked there in the 70s, though it was getting pretty run down by then. Thanks for this painting. I will tell my sisters and brothers about it.

Hey Steve, Let me just say I saw your article in the latest Watercolor publication. And secondly, I'm a great fan of good watercolors. I had studied for a couple of years with a man who was San Francisco's most well sold watercolorist and he did some wonderful work, from around the world. I think this painting is my favorite because ina sense it's not a scene, per se. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I think that wet area on the boardwalk is the point where you're looking at something familiar (even if you're not a fisheraman), a place where people have walked, and it places you there, on the nice old dock next to the water and in the light, somewhat reflecting. Awesome!!

  • Valerie Breazeale, on October 6th, 2001 commented about the painting Yellow Sky :

There is such a play between warm / cool colors and juxtoposition of complimentary colors that really livens this painting. Gives an almost irridencent quality to the overall picture. You definately know the language of color and you take liberties with your knowledge. You have chosen a wide variety of greens that keeps your eye moving (with interest)around this painting. Green is difficult to work with and can make or break a painting. Yet you have masterfully woven greens throught this work. As for your attention to detail. There is just enough information given to get your idea across without being overworked. This also keeps the work fresh and spontanious. Thanks for sharing this painting. I'm glad I stumbled upon it.

Never liked watercolor much-too pale, too calm, too lifeless. You blew all that away like a hurricane! Your use of vivid color, capture of time of day/evening, weather, air/space,and DETAILS are PERFECT. No one was my favorite --absolutely loved them all. Local Chambers of Commerce should be using your stuff in their ads and on their web sites! Exciting--a feast for the eyes, mind, and imagination. When I look at the FWB/Destin scenes, I'm there on the beach or walking toward that boat! Suggestion: At Christmas--the boat parades in Destin, tooling along under the bridge and along the docks, all glittery lights and glittery water--give us that. In summer have you seen the bunches of boats squatting on "crab island" while folks swim, sun, party, or rest(maybe one with the fireworks above the bridge on the 4th of July). Only downer, some of the comments above on your website, by the same authors, are repeated several times.

We missed you at the class reunion in July; you might be surprised at how many of the skinny ones got fat and vice versa. Some have managed to retain most of their hair (for some, the years have not been kind...sniff.) Some Indians have passed on to the great beyond -- oh yeah, and Barry has found the 'perfeck wave' in Costa Rica. He even bought a patch of jungle high up on the cliffs there; refuses to put in a road though, claims visitors enjoy the jungle hike...heh. Anyway, enjoyed the art. Take care, Jim Garrett

Steve your work is great! I've been to many of those places when the colors are only feeling. Best wishes

Watercolour is the hardest painting medium and rendering sea waves is the most difficult subject.Winslow Homer was the Master. Your sea is a success!! Be proud . Don't give up. Mes salutations et succès.

the first thing that attracts me to any painting is rich, transparent color and use of unexpected color. The shadows on the sand in Red Sky are wonderful as is the delicate tracery of the trees against the sky. I am new to watercolor painting and am enjoying browsing the web and seeing other artists work. I hope one day I can use color, light and shadow and create a Red Sky of my own. thanks.

Your painting are wonderful. I grew up in Ft Walton/Destin and just fell in love with your paintings. Was going to vote for my favorite but couldn't decide. Can you tell me where and if your prints are available for purchase? Thanks

The statue becomes outstanding for the simple background . We are surprised to find the rich colors in the artist's eyes.
