This is my favorite of the paintings listed on pages 1 - 9.
I like the realism and rustic aura it gives off. I like the varied techniques used to apply the watercolor. I believe the painting is well rounded and detailed just enough to not be overbearing. If I were not an artist myself I would probably buy a copy, but times are rough after Katrina. For the record, I studied art at the John McCrady Art School from 1972 - 1974, an experience I am sure you treasure as much as I do. Dan Marcus.

Seeing this lovely painting brought back so many happy memories. In the 1970s I went to elementary school at Patterson School(formerly South School) right across the street. Usually I brought a lunch to school, but every once in a while, my grandmother would meet me at the edge of the schoolyard at lunchtime and we would walk across the street to get a burger and french fries. The burgers had a wonderful 1000-island style sauce---to this day, my aunt and I still talk about that unique sauce!! Those sweet memories of my grandmother taking me for a simple but much treasured treat are very vivid even 20 years later. She passed away many years ago, but I always think of her whenever I pass that corner of PCH and Knob Hill. Thanks for your lovely painting.

My mom (Little miss Frostie Freeze hang out girl; lol) and I swear that those are our chairs. Her shoes, my straw bag with the leather straps. Paddle ball, yep. Had to be painted between 15th and 18th street. Cooler with an orange top...I still have the bag. Like...right at my feet.(had to take it out and compare stripes...) You do amazing work. The pier with the reflection in the sand is probably my favorite. But this one really hits home for me and mom.

I was raised in Manhattan Beach and graduated from Mira Costa (Class of '63). The picture of the Palms is nice and depicts a nice portion of the Beach. HOWEVER, to me Manhattan Beach is best depicted by its landmark pier. My father, Joseph Abowitt, worked for many many years for the MB - he had a lot to do with the liveability of this City. I have seen MB go through many changes and although it seems nice now - I believe the close unity of the city has changed. I imagine people who live in MB now love it as I loved it between 1945 - 1963. All this aside Mr. Hills, you are a wonderful artist. If it still exists, another wonderful landmark is Live Oaks Park. It has been three years since I've seen Manhattan Beach.

I have been involved in the visual arts at my local high school including murals and other projects. I just got started working with oil paints and try to find inspiration from other artists, while all my artwork is a one of a kind original. I try to reflect certain styles of artists including similar perspectives and subject material. I say "if you want to be a master artist, learn from one" and I was amazed, as well as inspired by this wonderful artist who created this water scene. I am from Florida, so this painting seems familiar to some areas I've observed. Great job, wonderful artist!

At great stop after the beach or just hanging out at night when you were looking for a party (or an occasional drag race).

on April 22nd, 2004 commented about the painting Calm After The Storm :
I grew up on Manhattan, and graduated from Micohi in '61. My mother grew up in the house I grew up in, and she graduated from Redondo High in '32. The image of the M.B. pier captures very well the feeling of a pier on a blustery day. Of course, the image is one that the artist copied from a photograph. It is too, too, realistic, having an enormous amount of precisely correctly proportioned detail and color, and therefore loses some of the sponenaity that would derive from a watercolor painted without reference to a photo. Admittedly, producing a painting like this "on the spot" would be very difficult (I have painted watercolors on the strand, and the wind tends to dry out the paper pretty quickly.) I would urge the artist to try to produce on-the-spot paintings occasionally. Of course, there will be many failures done outside; but the artist can continue to do in-the-studio paintings to bring in income, while honing outside skills. Discriminating watercolor lovers will quickly recognize an on-the-spot watercolor, and if executed well, will be willing to pay dearly for it. Good luck to the artist in his future endeavors.

I find it hard to obtain the various value of hues you obtain to creat depth and such great contrast. If you are teaching, I assume you may have made some video teaching aides. If so, send me info. In the meantime I have been painting some of your webb pictures and have been trying to improve and the colors just pop out.It seems to me that picking the right complementary colors and getting there values right would achieve the esthetic effects that your paintings so well depict. I have always wanted to obtain realistic water reflections, so hope to hear from you.

This is a great painting, and it's fascinating to read what you folks think
about it and about Foster's Freeze. I volunteer with the Los Angeles
Conservancy Modern Commitee (www.modcom.org) and we have been
working hard for 20 years saving places like this. The 1953 McDonald's
at Lakewood and Florence in Downey was a great victory.
This particular stand may be gone, but it's funny that the general idea is
that the entire 'lifestyle' is gone. It may be 2004, but you could still have
'one more rootbeer freeze' by going to an identical 1950's Foster's in
Torrance, or in Hawthorne. You can get a .59 cent burger under actual
golden arches in Downey, bowl a game at Java Lanes in Long Beach... or
you can have a night out at the Vineland Drive-In theatre in the City of
Industry.
I have a feeling I'm much younger than some of the folks reading here,
but the things you loved 40 or 50 years ago are often times alive and
well just a few miles away and I encourage you to go out and support
them.
Check out our site and maybe you will want to support the work of the
Conservancy as well. We have a big 20th anniversary driving tour coming
up in September, 2004.
Thank you.

My grandfather, John Poe, owned and operated this Foster's Freeze from the mid 50s until he passed away in August 1962. His sister and her husband, Marie and Laz Paul, then bought it and continued to operate it until sometime in the 70s. During the late 50s and early 60s, I can remember spending many summer vacations with them and got to help out at the store sweeping around the store and picking up trash and stacking stuff up in the back storeroom. My pay was a frosty cone or a slush or whatever I wanted for every two hours I worked there. I can vividly remember all the high school and college kids hanging there every Friday and Saturday night. Back in the late 40s, my grandpa, my dad and his brother made all the mix for all the Foster Freeze stores in Southern California. When they were bought out in the early 50s they were given several of the Foster Freeze stores in exchange. They were located in Santa Monica, Venice, Redondo Beach and Arcadia.

Thanks for giving me inspiration to try and paint the great water you have achieved in all your paintings.

Steve, I grew up in Aransas Pass, Texas. My parents were shrimpers. About the time I was born, my father built a wooden shrimpboat that looked very similar to this. It was named "Rose" and was a light turquoise and white. The only difference is that the nets hung from the back of the cabin and the engine hatch and bait boxes were in front of the cabin. My dad died 15 years ago this fall and the steering wheel from the "Rose" hangs in my home. Thanks for the memories.

Bonnie, on August 9th, 2003 commented about the painting Calm After The Storm :
I love this painting. I grew up in Manhattan Beach and this is the view from our house on the Strand. I treasure every appearance of the everchanging ocean, even the slate gray waves. For the record, however, the waves rarely - and only during major storms - break at the end of the pier. We used to watch, hoping, usually in vain, for the white foam of the crashing waves to come up to the concrete.

I particularly like the sky and the water in this painting as I know they are difficult to get them to come out so beautifully. The light and reflection are also very well done. This is a fantastic painting, I wish I could own it.

What memories! I too, grew up in Redondo Beach, lived on Vincent Park, across from RUHS. From small child to RUHS days, Frosty's was always in my life. It was our "hang out" in high school... The police would come by and chase us out and we'd take off for Taco Tios at Ave C & PCH. But we'd always end up back at Frosty's. It was our "place". As a struggling new watercolorist, I hope some day my paintings are half as wonderful as yours.

This is too cruel to make me choose between the house on Catalina, Foster's, 22nd.St. and all the others of Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan. I grew up in Redondo, attended both RUHS and MiCoHi so they all brought back memories of summer days on the sand and a time we thought would never end! I have also been to a lot of the places you paint in Florida. Destin, Mobile, Panama City and Gulf Shores are great beach places but none can compare with the South Bay. Loved your site and I'll pass it on to others who will love it too...Pat

A hot Summer afternoon and that smooth, cool "frostie" fighting with the salt on the lips. Body surfing at Ave. C had its crowning glory here at this memorable spot. The last of the frozen elixir slurped from the crispy cone as "Shaboom" blasted from the '51 Merc's radio. The trip home was always made sweeter by a stop at the Foster Freeze.
thanks for the memories, and in such vivid, warm colors.
A thousand words......

I remember the Foster Freeze as the place to get together and get a snack, we lived on Sapphire and Broadway and used to go there all the time. It is so sad to see your memories disappear, but this picture by a fantastic artist brings back the memories in such a good way. Well painted, great pictures, watercolor is hard and you make it look so easy.

i like this aquarelle very much
the athmosphere is like i have seen it my self in the past years when my wife and kids would run from the beach too our tent under the frightning clouds trhough the dunes and the wind.
i like it also for it s abstract texturesss that depict a real world.
i also feel it could have been any season with the same drama .I have the same attraction for sand and snow divided by a fence ,,and frikels of life spurting or crossing the dunes with the wind..

I too grew up in Redondo Beach, as did my parents, and for me too, Fosters is an icon. We spent many an evening, and/ or a hot afternoon there in the 60's. Oh for one more Rootbeer Freeze!

I love the pier. I was born and raised there, in Manhattan Beach. Almost everyday, my dad and i walked the pier. Later in life, i walked th epier and the strand from MB pier to HB pier.. most every day. I miss the water.. the pier. I now reside in the midwest. Through my travels, I can sincerely say...there is nothing that can compare to the MB pier...sand and surf.

Hi, I very much like your work. It was either "Calm after the storm" or this one as my favorite. I am a 'very' new beginer with watercolors so forgive me for not knowing the proper terms for discription. I only know what appeals to me, I found these pictures brought me directly to where they are. I love the detail, I do not know what type of watercolor tenique you are using here but it is something I would like to try. Do you Teach? Have videos available? I would be very interested.
thanks, molly

Foster Freeze was an icon to many generations of Redondo Beach & Redondo Union High School students. I can still see the old foster freeze, meeting my frends there so many times throughout the years. What a shame it could not be restored but instead like all of the great old places in Redondo <like The Fox Redondo, should have absolutely been restored>, it too was torn down all in the name of "modernizing" Redondo Beach. It would be so wonderful if those in charge had left some of these great places so that our kids and the generations to come could have seen what Redondo Beach really was.
